The Cardinal(s) Rule
Those pesky Cardinals! They've done it again. Just when you get all excited, especially as a former Montreal Expos fan... when you think that the Washington Nationals are going to make it to the NLCS, those St. Louis Cardinals are back on their perch singing away!
Washington goes up 6-0 after the 3rd inning, they have Gio Gonzalez (21-8, 2.89 ERA) wheeling on the mound, and one would think "oh man, this is it!" Evidently it was not the time for the Nationals. "Nattitude" will have to wait again until next season, and oh how GM Mike Rizzo will feel the wrath of the Washington fanbase and media in light of his decision to bench Strasburg.
The St. Louis Cardinals scored 1 run in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, 1 in both the 7th and 8th, and capped it all off with 4 in the 9th! How does this team do it? I thought that last years' heroics with David Freese, Lance Berkman, and Matt Holiday were beyond memorable and certainly only repeatable after many years, but these Cardinals pull a stunt like this the very next season!
Then I figured that without Tony La Russa at the helm, these Cardinals might need some time to get used to new manager and once catcher, Mike Matheny, but evidently this is not the case.
Then surely the St. Louis Cardinals would take some time to get used to life after Albert Pujols, right? Wrong again.
"I told you that when we came back that it's going to be the most epic comeback ever," stated pitcher Chris Carpenter to 24 year old Pete Kozma. Kozma along with Daniel Descalso were catalysts in the late 9th inning comeback.
These Cardinals now face-off against the San Francisco Giants, who also are a team with recent postseason experience and success.
In the American League we look to the Detroit Tigers to knock off those New York Yankees. I believe that they can accomplish this with the combination of power in Cabrera and Fielder paired with pitching in Justin Verlander, who along with Stephen Strasburg are currently the best pitchers in the game.
And now it's the time you've all been waiting for... my picks.
ALCS
Tigers over Yankees in 6
NLCS
Cardinals over Giants in 7
World Series
Tigers over Cardinals in 6
The MLB postseason has been fantastic thus far and we look forward to the League Championship series...
